The Colombo District Court today issued an order preventing the UNP from acting on notification letters issued to 6 MPs, including SLMC leader Rauf Hakeem, who were elected to parliament after contesting under the UNP.
Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe in the letters had notified the MPs to show cause for voting in favor of the impeachment motion brought against former Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake.
The order was issued when 6 petitions, filed against the UNP acting on the notifications, by a group of MPs including Rauf Hakeem was taken up at court today.
The petition points out that although the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) had formed an alliance with the United National Party during the previous general election, it was not a part of the UNP. Therefore the UNP has no control over the SLMC parliamentarians, it said.
After taking these facts into consideration, court issued the order effective until March 05.
