Deputy Power and Energy Minister Premalal Jayasekara says they have made a request to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka to increase the electricity tariff, in the wake of the recent hike in fuel prices.
He stated that discussions are currently underway regarding the issue.
Reports had hinted of a possible increase in electricity tariff, however a final decision on a revision of tariffs is taken by the Public Utilities Commission, the regulator of Sri Lanka’s electricity sector.
However, the Director General of the Commission Damitha Kumarasinghe, when contacted by Ada Derana, stated that the PUCSL has so far not received a request regarding a tariff hike.
He stated that if a request is made, a decision can be reached regarding a tariff revision by seeking the opinion of all concerned parties including the public according to the national policy.
