VIDEO: US not concerned with rights of Tamils, Sinhalese or Muslims - Tamara

The US is not moving a resolution on Sri Lanka because it feels that the rights of the Tamils, Sinhalese or Muslims are at stake but rather because it has a strategic interest in the region, Former Lankan Permanent Representative to Geneva Tamara Kunanayakam stated.

Addressing a forum on issues pertaining to Sri Lanka and International Relations, she said that the interest the US and its allies have shown in Sri Lanka has nothing to do with our people nor our interests nor our human rights.

The US and the West feel that the multilateralism of the UN which is based on sovereign equality between states is outdated while they use the problems within nations to intervene in the form of colonies in order to take control of the wealth and resources concentrated in that area, she stated.

Kunanayakam claimed that the US was set on taking control of the region of Eurasia where the largest amount of global resources is locate in order to maintain their supremacy adding that we are only a pawn on the grand chessboard of global strategy.

She then stated that Sri Lanka needs to build and strengthen relationships with its potential allies, not just when we need votes but constantly.

She added that many countries in Asia take the Latin American region very seriously but Sri Lanka works under the myth that the South American region is poor, ruled by dictators and unimportant and have not worked on building relations with the countries in that region.

Due to this situation, the Latin American countries only get their information through Western Media channels and have a distorted image of Sri Lanka as a result.
