
Police arrested two persons engaged in illegal excavations in a forest area near the Kadurukotte Purana Raja Maha Vihara in Puttalam, in search of buried treasure.
Four suspects were attempting to unearth buried treasure, however two of them had escaped during the raid carried out by officers from the Police Special Archaeological Protection Unit of the Puttalam DIG’s Office.
Police said the suspects had already dug a hole around 30 feet deep and around 5 feet wide and that various equipment used for the digging and several religious statues were taken into custody.
The arrested suspects, including a 19-year-old from Rajanganaya and a 55-year-old from Kiula, have been handed over to Puttalam Police for onward action.
