Chilaw Police has launched investigations regarding a Chief Inspector of Police, who serves as the Traffic officer-in-charge (OIC) of a Gampaha Police Division, in connection with an incident where a person was abducted, detained and forced to sign on several documents.

Derrick Chaminda, from Chilaw, says he was abducted by four men, including a person who was dressed in clothes similar to the police uniform, and taken in a vehicle to a location where he was detained and forced to sign a blank document.

Later they had taken a photocopy of his NIC and several other documents before dropping him off near the Ridiwella Grounds in Chilaw, according to the complaint lodged by him.

Chaminda had informed Chilaw Police that he identifies two of his kidnappers and had also provided police with the license plate number of the vehicle they had used.

Acting on this information, the Chialw Police crimes unit arrested a resident of Yakkala in Gampaha along with a car.

Upon interrogation he had revealed that the Gampaha Division Traffic OIC and a father-son duo from Chilaw were involved in the abduction.

Therefore Chilaw Police has commenced investigations in order to arrest these suspects.

Although police suspect a financial dispute as the cause for the abduction, they are still uncertain of the police officer’s connection to the incident.

However, Gampaha Traffic OIC Chief Inspector Wasantha Perera, when contacted by Ada Derana, denied involvement in any such incident and said he was not “aware” of it.

The Police Spokesman’s Office also said they were not aware of such an incident while Police Spokesman SP Buddhika Siriwardana was unavailable for comment.

A special team of officers from the Chilaw Headquarters Police has launched investigations under instruction of SP in charge of Chilaw Division, Saliya Silva, Ada Derana reporter said.
