
The chief incumbent of the Viladagoda Raja Maha Viharaya in Saliyawewa, Puttalam District was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds today.
Anuradhapurage Chandawimala Thero, the chief incumbent of the Viladagoda Raja Maha Viharaya, has been admitted to the Puttalam Base Hospital.
A spokesman for the hospital said that the monk is currently undergoing surgery and that the health condition cannot be ascertained yet.
Police said preliminary inquiries have revealed that the monk had suffered gunshot injuries after a hunting trap, set up to poach wild animals, was set off when he had inadvertently passed by upon leaving the temple.
Saliyawewa Police is conducting further investigations in to the incident.
