The Police Spokesman’s Office today said that complaints are continuously being received regarding incidents where certain criminals claiming to be police officers are demanding ransom and threatening people.
Several cases have been reported of an organized group threatening people over the phone and demanding ransom.
The criminals allegedly threatening people claiming they have evidence linking the victims with the LTTE and therefore demand money to refrain from taking legal action, a police release said.
The Police Spokesman’s Office said that they are unable to prosecute such criminals because people are not willing to lodge complaints regarding them.
