Over 100 persons were arrested and will be presented before the courts for driving under the influence of alcohol during the New Year season, police stated.

The police conducted routine checks during the holiday season in order to minimize the number of vehicular accidents.

The police apprehended 122 drivers who were operating their vehicles after consuming alcohol while the Police Media Spokesman SP Buddhika Siriwardena stated that five persons were killed in road accidents during the season.

Furthermore, he said that the police will conduct similar operations in the coming days to apprehend all those driving under the influence while requesting the public to abstain from consuming alcohol before driving.
