Increasing the electricity tariff is the beginning of the end for the Mahinda Rajapaksa government while the Public Utilities Commission serves as a puppet, UNP MP Gayantha Karunathilaka stated.

He said that the president had increased the electricity tariffs and had hit hard at the stomachs of the suffering public adding that the government promised to give the people relief but have only succeeded in piling sorrow and pain on them.

The MP also criticized the new Minister of Power and Energy Pavithra Wanniarachchi for the rise in electricity tariffs.

He reminded the public that they did not suffer like this during the UNP government and that the current government was putting the burden of its own wastage and corruption upon the helpless people.

MP Karunathilaka said that the people used to flee the country because of terrorism but were now leaving the island due to the rapidly increasing cost of living.

Speaking at a press conference held today (April 22) he also highlighted that a litre of kerosene was only priced Rs.30 when the UNP government was in power while it is not Rs.130 per litre.
