Operations at the Norochcholai power plant broke down once again last night (May 6) at around 8.42pm it was reported. A spokesman for the power plant stated that it was back to operational status by 3.30am today.
The Norochcholai power plant has broken down on several occasions while power cuts in several areas of the island were reported last night.
Meanwhile, Engineers state that power failures may be frequent in the coming days due to the adverse weather conditions, adding that these failures were not cases of sabotage.
This comes in the wake of the government’s implementation of steep electricity tariff hikes which have drawn severe opposition from several parties including some within the government itself.
The electricity tariffs were increased to reduce heavy losses and debts accumulated by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) according to the Power and Energy Minister.
