The former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Deyata Kirula National Exhibition 2013 has been arrested for alleged misappropriation of building funds.
She was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) according to a complaint filed by Telecommunications and Information Technology Ministry regarding the alleged misappropriation amounting to over Rs 39 million.
The former Deyata Kirula CEO will be produced at the Fort Magistrate’s Court today while the CID is conducting further investigations, the Police Spokesman’s Office said.
The complaint against the CEO of the Deyata Kirula exhibition, regarding improper tender and financial procedures, was filed on 21 February 2013 by the Secretary to the Ministry of Telecommunication and Information Technology, H.M. Gunasekara.
The complainant alleged that she had acted contrary to the procedure of the Procurement and Technical Evaluation Committee and thereby cheated over Rs 39 million while constructing temporary toilets, a reading room and a canteen at the Deyata Kirula exhibition site.
It charged that the contract relating to the construction of temporary toilets had been given to a private company without the approval of the Procurement and Technical Evaluation Committee by the CEO of the Deyata Kirula exhibition and an additional payment of Rs. 1.7 million had been made to the contractor.
