Groups claim ‘Mahasen’ inappropriate name for storm

Sri Lankan minister of disaster management, Mahinda Amaraweera said that he has informed the officials to do away with the name ‘Mahasen’ to identify the storm, Agencies reported.
Some nationalist groups claimed Mahasen was a Sinhala King who brought prosperity to the island. Thus, it was wrong for a destructive cyclone to be named after him, they argued.
King Mahasen ruled Lanka between 275 AD and 301 AD. The ancient ruler had fought for high morals among Buddhist monks and built irrigation tanks for the benefit of the masses. So, as the cyclone hovers near the island, the department has decided to let it go ‘nameless’.
