
The suspect arrested over the murder of a 73-year-old woman in Pitigala as well as for the abduction and raping of her daughter, has died after falling and hitting hit head on a rock while attempting to flee police custody this morning.
Police Spokesman SP Buddhika Siriwardena stated that the incident occurred at around 4.00 a.m. today when the suspect escaped from custody and fell while jumping from a high place, hitting his head on a rock in the process.
Police on May 16 had rescued a woman who was found with her hands and feet bound, in an abandoned house. It was later revealed that the suspect in question had murdered her mother before kidnapping and raping her.
Her mother’s body was found at their home in Mattaka, Pitigala while police arrested the suspect following an operation in Agalawatta, Kalutara.
He was escorted by police officers to a wooded area in Mattaka this morning in order to reveal the location of weapons when he suddenly jumped from a high place in an attempt to flee.
However, he had fallen and hit his head on a rock, the police spokesman said.
The suspect’s body has been placed at the Elpitiya Hospital.
