Kanimozhi gets threat letter from ‘fidayeen’ outfit

A Fidayeen outfit has threatened Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi, MP, with death for not obliging with a donation it had sought from her to carry out “operations in south and southeast Asia, especially Sri Lanka, Myanmar, etc”, her DMK party told state DGP in a complaint on Friday.

At first she did not take the threat letter seriously. But, when a second one landed at her place, she showed them both to her father and DMK president M Karunanidhi who decided that the party should lodge a formal complaint with the DGP and seek protection for her. Accordingly, senior party functionaries met DGP K Ramanujam and presented a complaint along with the threat letters.

He has directed the state intelligence to look into the threat letters. Police security has been beefed up for Kanimozhi, sources said. In the first letter, someone claiming to represent a Fidayeen (Islamic militant group with suicide squads) outfit by name ‘Harakat AlShahaab Al-Mujahideen’, sought “a small amount” from Kanimozhi to help in its major operations planned in South and Southeast Asia, including Sri Lanka.

Her donation would help “pay for men and material in Sri Lanka” where her DMK party too had taken a stand against the government. It would lead to Sri Lanka “bleed and cry” and in return, “we will owe you any number (of) sacrifice(s) whenever you demand”, said the letter, which Kanimozhi reportedly chose to ignore and let its deadline of May 25 pass.

Haji. Gul Md Hussain is said to have signed the letter. The second letter was grossly abusive and intimidating, swearing death to the DMK MP for “insulting” Hussain with her silence. Despite being rich, she had “no heart to help”, complained the man, setting a fresh deadline of May 28 and threatening, her that “there will be no look(ing) back”.

“There are clear indicators to conclude that these threat letters are definitely a hoax. In any case, we are investigating their origin and hope to nab the culprit soon”, a senior intelligence official told DC. Pointing out that the letters had the crescent along with ‘786’ at the top, he said the Islamic symbol is used only by normal mosquegoing Muslims and not the Fidayeens.

Also, the Mujahideen group mentioned in the letterhead is a Sunni outfit based in Somalia but the signatory Hussain is a Shia name an impossibility considering the hostility between the two Muslim sects. – Deccan Chronicle
