
Authorities have decided to completely prohibit the transporting of cattle for slaughter from the Polonnaruwa area, with effect from July 01.
The decision was made at the Polonnaruwa District Development Committee meeting held today under the auspices of Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena.
Extensive discussions were held during the meeting regarding the transport of cattle within Polonnaruwa, with some officials stating that nearly 250 cattle are transported from the area on a daily basis.
After taking these facts into account Minister Sirisena instructed relevant authorities to take necessary steps to prohibit the transporting of cattle and instructed District Secretary Nimal Abeysiri to look into the matter.
The minister also instructed the DIG in charge of Polonnaruwa and other officers to take strict action against those found transporting cattle, to be slaughtered for meat, after July 01.
