Sri Lanka was ranked at 110 in this year’s Global Peace Index (GPI) falling seven places since last year while India was ranked lower than Sri Lanka at 141. The study was conducted according to 22 qualitative and quantitative indicators of the absence of fear of violence in 162 countries.
Sri Lanka had a GPI score of 2.23 with elements such as access to weapons, political terror, organized internal conflict and perceived criminality in society being some of the major contributors to the score.
Meanwhile, India was placed lower on the index at rank 141 with militarization, domestic and international conflicts as well as corruption being the major contributors.
In the region of South Asia, Bhutan is the most peaceful country while Sri Lanka was placed at number four and India at five.
The US was ranked 100 overall on the index while militarization, jailed population and conflicts fought being the major contributors.
Sri Lanka experienced the greatest improvement in its overall peacefulness following the ending of decades of civil war, according to the 2012 Global Peace Index last year.
Sri Lanka was ranked 103 overall and 17 in the Asia Pacific region, ahead of India (142), Pakistan (149) and Thailand (129).
