Kumar Sangakkara hit a splendid ton while Nuwan Kulasekara came up with a game changing half-century as Sri Lanka beat England by 7 wickets in their ICC Champions Trophy group A match played at the Oval on Thursday.
The duo put on an unbeaten 110 run stand for the 4th wicket to help Sri Lanka reach the target with 17 balls to spare and keep their hopes of making it to the semi-final alive.
Sanagakkara scored 134 not out off just 135 balls with 12 boundaries while Kulasekara, who had been promoted up the order, ended undefeated on 58 off only 38 balls with five boundaries and three maximums.
England posted a formidable total of 293/7 thanks to half-centuries from Jonathan Trott (76), Joe Root (69) and Alastair Cook (55) apart from a terrific cameo of 33 from 13 balls by Ravi Bopara.
However, their efforts ended in futility as Sangakkara’s 134 off 135 balls and Kulasekara’s 58 off just 38, along with useful contributions from Tillakaratne Dilshan (44) and Mahela Jayawardene (42), helped Sri Lanka emerge victorious with 2.5 overs to spare.
England, who next face New Zealand in Cardiff on Sunday, and Sri Lanka are on two points with Australia on one ahead of their meeting with Angelo Mathews’ side at the Oval on Monday.
