Five Sri Lankan nationals were detained at the airport in Chennai for the alleged possession of ten kilograms of gold jewellery, valued at about INR 20 million (over 43 million Sri Lankan rupees), without valid papers.
The gold jewellery was seized by officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence last night, on a tip-off, when they searched the baggage of the five Lankan nationals, who arrived by a Spicejet flight from New Delhi, airport sources said.
The passengers identified as Mohammed Sabhi, Neela Verma, Mohammed Ismail, Devendran and Mohammed Nizam were being interrogated by the DRI officials, they were quoted as saying by PTI.
The jewellery was kept concealed in the suitcases of the five passengers, they said.
