The 13th amendment to the constitution is a great threat on the country’s security, existence and unity, Chief Government Whip and Minister of Water Supply and Drainage, Dinesh Gunawardena stated.
Speaking at a press conference held today (June 27), the Minister said that the 13th amendment was approved illegally during its time and that the speaker of parliament who signed it had immediately requested the Supreme Court to abolish it.
However, he said that the Supreme Court had rejected the speaker’s request at the time.
The Minister stated that the government is concentrating on reducing the chance of there being a conflict between Provincial Councils and the central government while he pledged his full support to the cause.
He also said that the development work in the nation would not be affected by any outcome concerning Provincial Councils as the development work is usually implemented through parliamentarians representing Districts and Government Agents.
