
Nominations for Northern, Central and North Western Provincial Council elections will be called within a week, the Deputy Elections Commissioner was quoted as saying by the Government Information Department.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday issued a proclamation to the Elections Commissioner to conduct the Northern Provincial Council election.
Meanwhile the Elections Secretariat has received the Gazette notification on dissolving the Central and North Western Provincial Councils. A spokesman for the Secretariat said they received it last night.
The United National Party says it will commence the selection of candidates for the Provincial Council election in the coming weeks and that initial planning for this has been completed.
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party has already commenced interviews to select candidates to contest for the three provinces while the General Secretary of the party, Maithripala Sirisena said they have reached the final stage of the process.
The Tamil National Alliance is yet to decide whether it will contest the upcoming election.
