Police nab 3 suspected human smugglers

Three suspects have been arrested by police in the Dikwella area for aiding in human smuggling operations, which illegally ferry Sri Lankan nationals to Australia for a large fee.
The agents, identified as residents of Mawanella, Negombo and Nakulugomuwa, were arrested by officers of the Matara Division Criminal Investigations Unit.
Three cheques amounting to around Rs 3 million, a passport and other equipment found in the possession of the suspects were also taken into custody.
They are suspected of organising a multiday trawler which had reportedly set sail from the Kudawella beach on July 05 with 60 persons board.
The suspects are being investigated by the Criminal Investigations Department a under detention order.
