Seven suspects in the murder of Bambalapitiya-based businessman Mohamed Siyam, including the former DIG Western Province (North) Vass Gunawardena, have been further remanded until August 01.
The suspects were produced at the Colombo Magistrate’s Court today by officers of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
The case was postponed till August 01 by Colombo Additional Magistrate Mohammed Sahabdeen due to an issue pertaining to the attorneys appearing on behalf of the accused, Ada Derana court reporter said.
Siyam was abducted and murdered in the Dompe area on May 22 and following investigations into the incident, the CID on June 06 arrested Sub-Inspector Lakmini Bamunusinghe, attached to the office of the DIG Western Province (North), along with three Police Constables (PCs) serving in the DIG’s special unit.
Upon interrogating the arrested police officers, the CID uncovered information regarding the former DIG’s alleged involvement in the businessman’s murder and recorded a statement from him on the same day.
Gunawardena was arrested by the CID on June 10 and remanded while he was interdicted by the police on June 18.
