
A man who demanded a ransom of Rs 2.5 million from a businessman in Kinniya by threading to abduct his child and hurl a grenade at his residence has been arrested by police along with an accomplice.
IM Nijamdeen, an owner of several fuel stations in Kinniya, had lodged a complaint police after the ransom demand.
Several attempts by police officers to trap the suspect using various schemes failed, however they succeeded in capturing the accomplice sent to collect the ransom money from Kakamunai in Kinniya last evening.
Police officers then used the accomplice to lure the main suspect to a location near the Kuttikarachchenai mosque in the night to handover the ransom money and arrested him in a planned operation.
The suspect has been identified as a 28-year-old youth from Nadathivu in Muttur, Ada Derana reporter said.
The suspects, who were arrested by the Kinniya Police on information received by the Trincomalee Police Special Bureau, are scheduled to the produced before the Trincomalee Magistrate today.
