The Court of Appeal today issued notice on Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe and the UNP Working Committee to appear before the court on September 16 following a petition filed by Provincial Councilors Shiral Lakthilaka and Maithri Gunaratne.

The petition filed against the termination of their party membership was taken up today before the Chairman of the Appeal Court Judge S. Sri Skandaraja, who issued notice on the respondents of the case.

A total of 94 individuals including UNP leader Ranil Wickramasinghe, General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, members of the UNP working committee and disciplinary committee have been named as respondents.

President’s Counsel Sanjaya Jayawardena, appearing on behalf of the petitioners, stated that the expelling of Shiral Lakthilaka and Maithri Gunaratne from the party was against the law and natural justice.

He also requested that court permit the publishing of an advert in the newspapers to inform all members of the United National Party regarding the court order.

The Appeal Court approved the publishing of the advert in all three languages.
