
A person was killed after being shot by a wildlife officer in Upper Puliyankulama, Anuradhapura last night, police said.
A team of officers from the Upper Puliyankulama Wild Life Office had seized a large haul of illegally felled timber yesterday.
The owner of the timber haul had visited the official residence of the wildlife officers later in the night and threatened one of them.
The officer had then proceeded to open fire at the man using his service weapon. The gunshot victim was admitted to the Anuradhapura Hospital with critical wounds, however had succumbed to injuries shortly after.
The wildlife officer who had carried out the shooting has surrendered to police while Anuradhapura Police Station is handling investigations into the incident.
