Police have arrested a 24-year-old youth for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl from Meegahawela, Koswatta after abducting her from the care of parents.
The girl had traveled to the Marawila Hospital along with her mother and sister on July 08 and had later left claiming she wanted to visit the hospital canteen. However, she had not returned.
The mother had later found out that her daughter had runaway with a youth she was having an affair with. She then proceeded to file a complaint with Marawila Police regarding her daughter’s disappearance.
The girl had returned home on July 28 claiming that she had lived with her boyfriend, who works at a coir mill in Meegahawela, at his father’s residence in Manampitiya, Polonnaruwa for the past couple of days.
The mother had then informed Marawila Police that her underage daughter had been raped by the youth, who was arrested by police afterwards.
Marawila Police has handed over the suspect to the Polonnaruwa Police Station for onward investigations as the incident is said to have occurred under their jurisdiction.
The 12-year-olg has been admitted to the Marawila Hospital.
