Medic arrested for performing abortion on 18-year-old

A medical officer at the Brunswick Estate in Maskeliya has been arrested for performing an illegal abortion on an 18-year-old girl, police said. The suspects in question had reportedly charged Rs 10,000 to perform the abortion.
The young girl, an estate worker, had been admitted to the Maskeliya Hospital due to excessive bleeding, Ada Derana reporter said.
Hospital authorities had later contacted the police and informed of the illegal abortion, after which the medical officer was arrested.
He was produced at the Hatton Magistrate’s Court and subsequently released on a cash bail of Rs 10,000 and a personal bail of Rs 50,000.
Maskeliya Police are conducting further investigations.
