Chunnakam substation to be commissioned next month

The newly built Chunnakam Sub Station, for supplying power to Jaffna, will be vested in the people in September thereby fulfilling the electricity requirement in the peninsula, the Ministry of Power and Energy said.
The station, constructed at a cost of Rs 1,800 million, will generate 63 megawatts to power over 120,000 houses.
22 years ago the Lakshapana Power Station had supplied electricity to the Jaffna Peninsula, however the process was halted in 1990 due to LTTE activities.
Later electricity was supplied using large scale power generators, although it was not as successful, the ministry said.
