Recalling that former Prime Miniser Indira Gandhi got a Sri Lankan navy captain arrested for attacking Tamil Nadu fishermen inside Indian waters, DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Sunday exhorted the Centre to follow her footsteps.
Karunanidhi said such severe actions alone would control the Lankan navy, which had time and again attacked and arrested fishermen from the State.
In a letter to partymen, Karunanidhi said while the Centre was firm in acting against the Italian marines who attacked Kerala fishermen, the same seriousness had not been shown with regards to attack on Tamil fishermen.
He said the Tamil Eelam Supporters’ Organisation had already passed a resolution demanding establishment of a naval base in Dhanushkodi or Rameswaram. This would provide a long-term solution to the fishermen’s issue, he added. (ENS)
