40 arrested for violating election laws - Police

Forty arrests have been made so far over complaints regarding election law violations ahead of the polls in the Northern, North Western and Central provinces, the chief of the Police Election Secretariat, Senior DIG Gamini Navaratne said.
He stated that a majority of the complaints include illegal propaganda activities, acts of intimidation, threatening and violence.
Over 70 complaints pertaining to the upcoming Provincial Council polls have been recorded reported to the police elections desk with a majority of them surfacing from Kurunegala, Jaffna and Hatton, he said.
The Senior DIG in charge of elections assured that steps will be taken to punish those responcible for violating election laws, irrespective of their position or status.
