A group of parents have demanded that an investigation be held into the deaths of several infants over the past week at the Mahamodara hospital in Galle.
The parents claim that their newly born infants had been healthy at birth but had died a few hours afterwards in the care of hospital staff that they allege is untrained.
However, the Deputy Director for the hospital, Dr. Nandana Liyanapathirana rejected these allegations stating that four infants had died during the week while three of the infants had died at birth and the other soon afterwards.
He also dismissed claims that this was an unusual number of infant deaths stating that this was a normal occurrence.
