UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon stated that an internal review of UN action in Sri Lanka during the final stages of the war had identified a systematic failure on its part.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly yesterday (September 25) he claimed that member states did not provide the UN system with support to meet the tasks they themselves had set while the system did not adapt properly or deliver fully.
Remembering the 20th anniversary of the Vienna World Conference on Human Rights, Ban Ki Moon reminded the assembly that they needed to renew their commitment to the UN’s founding principles while claiming that he intended to do more to help member states reach an early consensus to prevent large scale violations. He added to this that he will implement recommendations to ensure that the UN system upholds its responsibilities under the Charter.
