
A man was arrested today for attempting to smuggle out of the country 12 small gold bars valued at about Rs 7.5 million by hiding them in his rectum at the airport in Katunayake.
The suspect had arrived at the airport to board a flight to Mumbai when he was arrested by customs officers, Customs Media Spokesman Leslie Gamini said.
He stated that the gold which was taken into custody by airport customs weighs nearly one-and-a-half kilograms and is estimated to be worth around Rs 7.5 million.
Mr Gamini stated that this was the 8th detection concerning canceled gold made within the month.
The suspect, a resident of Nikaweratiya, is detained and further investigations are being carried out by customs officers at Katunayake Airport, the spokesman said.
