Met Department warns of rough seas and showers

The Disaster Management Center today warned that sea areas off the coast from Jaffna to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle will be rough at times as the wind speed may increase up to 80kmph.

According to the Department of Meteorology showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea area off the coast extending from Colombo to Trincomalee via Galle and Hambantota.
 
“The winds over the sea area  off  the coast from Jaffna to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle ,is south westerly and 30-50 kmph and can be strengthen up to 80kmph at times. Winds over other sea areas around the island is 20-30 kmph and it also can strengthen up to 65 kmph,” it forecasted.

The sea area off the coast from Mannar to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle will be very rough at times and other sea areas around the Island will be rough at times, the Met Department warned.

The very severe cyclone-PILINE is located about 1100km to the Northeast of Jaffna and moving towards India and is expected to enter Indian East coast tonight.

Though there is no direct effect to Sri-Lanka the winds over the island (particularly along the western slopes of the Central hills) and suburb sea areas can be strengthen at  times to times, the Met Department says. Heavy showers also can be expected in the southwestern parts of the island.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces. Heavy falls ( about 100mm) are also likely at some places. Some showers can be expected over other areas too.

Fairly strong winds are expected over the country and neighboring sea areas, particularly along the western slopes of the Central hills.
