Two Pakistan naval ships PNS NASR and Khaibar will arrive at Colombo Port on Sunday on a four-day goodwill visit.

As part of goodwill, Pakistan Navy ships frequently make port calls on Sri Lanka and these visits are aimed at further strengthening the defence relationship between Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Sri Lanka is an important regional country and Pakistan Navy accords great importance to cooperation with the Sri Lankan Navy, says a press statement received from the Pakistan High Commission in Colombo on Saturday.

The PNS NASR is a leading unit of Pakistani Navy Fleet’s 9th Auxiliary and Mine Warfare Squadron. Its name, an Arabic word meaning “HELP”, denotes its combat support role vital for sustained naval operations at sea.

The ship in addition also undertakes long range helicopter operations with anti-ship missile and torpedoes.

The PNS NASR, commanded by Captain Tarique Hussain PN, has the honour of participating in a large number of multinational/joint exercises.

The PNS NASR participated extensively in tsunami relief operations in 2004 at Maldives having the distinction to undertake the very first rescue operation in that country by any organization.

It also had the honour of visiting various countries like Australia, Gulf, Far East region and South East regions.

The PNS Khaibar derives its name from a famous battle in 629 AD during which seemingly impregnable fortress of Khaibar was captured by the Muslim forces led by Hazrat Ali (RA) under the guidance of Holy Prophet (PBUH). Khaibar is the third ship of Pakistan Navy to be so named.

The PNS Khaibar, commanded by Captain Muhammad Faisal Abbasi PN, is the fourth of eight Type-21 `AMAZON’ class frigates.

This ship was acquired by Pakistan Navy from UK in early 90s. After its induction in Pakistan Navy, it has undergone major modifications and up-gradations. - APP
