The decomposed body of a Sri Lankan man was found in the rooftop water tank of a building in Al Khail Gate community in Dubai’s Al Quoz area.

Residents of the building, designated for executive bachelors, are shocked and disgusted after realising the reason for the stink in their tap water for the past few days.

The Dubai Police, who fished out the body on Tuesday night, identified the man as a 34-year-old Sri Lankan cook who had been missing for a week as per a complaint lodged by his friends.

Police suspect that the man, said to be an alcoholic, had committed suicide after being sacked from his job in a Russian restaurant in Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR). This is the fourth case of suicide reported in the gated community since February 2012.

On Tuesday night, the police were called in by the building management after some residents complained of foul smell in the water from the taps and showers for the past two days.

The officers who rushed to the community found stench emanating from one of the rooftop water tanks in the building. Sources said investigators were stunned to see the partially decomposed body of the man floating in the water. The body had only a vest and underwear on it.

The police did a thorough search about man missing complaints from the area and also quizzed several residents in the building. It was then they received the information that the victims’ friends in the building had filed a complaint a week ago.

Upon interrogation, the friends said the cook had been very upset after losing his job.

On the night they met last in their flat in the same building, the friends said the cook was heavily drunk. Apparently, he could not bear the job loss as he had many responsibilities to fulfil. The friends did not see him the next day, following which they filed a missing report.

The friends identified him after seeing a tattoo on the body. The police said further investigation would be carried out though preliminary investigation by forensic doctors did not find any criminal motive behind the death. - Khaleej Times
