Import tax on potatoes, onions slashed

Import tax imposed on potatoes, big onions and red onions have been reduced from midnight today (16), the Ministry of Finance and Planning said. Duty on potatoes has been reduced by Rs 30, big onions by Rs 25 and red onions by Rs 10.
The ministry stated that the decision was taken according to instructions provided by the President.
The finance ministry also says that local produce of potatoes, big onions and red onions have already started to enter the country’s market and therefore believe they can be provided at a reasonable price during the festive season.
