A fund raiser in aid of the refurbishment of the Junior Science Laboratory
Much of the success of a school depends on the vitality and activities of its Past Pupils Association formed by loyal students to raise funds and offer scholarships etc. to the progress of their alma mater in various ways. Saiva Mangaiyar Vidyalayam is no exception.
 

The Past Pupils’ Association (PPA) of Saiva Mangaiyar Vidyalayam has hosted several successful events and fundraisers, including Navarasa Mela 2006, a multi-cultural event, and Walk for Green Future 2012. These initiatives have greatly assisted the management in the development of the school’s infrastructure and other facilities.

As per Swami Vivekananda’s exhortation, the women have yet again proved that they are capable and strong-willed enough to achieve anything. As a milestone of the PPA’s thriving journey, they have undertaken the responsibility of developing the school’s Junior Laboratory. The PPA ultimately aims for an intelligent society to be produced from their school and as a result this fundraiser, Vaanavil 2013 has been organized with an estimated cost of two to three million rupees.


Vaanavil 2013, the song and dance extravaganza is to be staged on the 29th and 30th of November at the Kathiresan Hall, Bambalapitiya, Colombo. At this event, it is planned to showcase highly acclaimed artistes such as the winners of Vijay TV’s Airtel Super Singer, and Jodi No. 1. The latest 2013 title winning pair, Rafiq and Gabriella will dance, which will be a highlight of the show. The Association is hoping to attract a considerable number of attendees with such recognized talents on display.
 

Saiva Mangaiyar Vidyalayam, also known as Hindu Ladies College, was founded in September, 1932 on a Vijayadasamy Day at “Besant House”, the Theosophical Society Headquarters at Peterson Lane, Wellawatte by the Saiva Mangaiyar Kalagam, an approved charity with just seven children on roll. When the number of students increased the school moved into its present location at 23, Rudra Mawatte, Colombo - 6 by acquiring its own premises.


The patrons who extended uncompromising devotion in establishing the school realized the need at the time for a Hindu Girls School in Colombo to impart young Tamil women with a sound education within an atmosphere of Hindu culture and tradition. Their main objective was to empower young females in society with a strong educational and cultural background so that they could participate as decision makers and leaders, which was not a prevalent concept among the male-dominated society of that period.


In the current context, the activities of the PPA have been directed towards the same dream that was pursued by the band of dedicated women leaders who established the institution. As a result the PPA has been involved in various fundraisers, social projects and charitable initiatives. Some of the notable events that have been initiated and hosted by them are:


1.    The EGC Fund - The EGC Fund of the School was initiated by the PPA with donations from well-wishers around the world. This fund has been responsible for the education of approximately 30 to 35 students annually from the interest derived from the Fixed Deposits. When the civil conflict in the North and East was at its peak, Saiva Mangaiyar Kalagam did not hesitate to embrace the displaced students. 12 students from Wanni were taken into the School hostel and the PPA provided them with the necessary assistance under the EGC fund.


2.    Navarasa Mela 2006 – This was another notable initiative of the PPA that displayed vivid cultural features of the Tamil society such as music, dance and drama by the students of the Vidyalayam that have been part of its ancient traditions. The event was organized as a precursor to the school’s 75th year anniversary. The event was highly acclaimed by various parties for its rich traditional and cultural essence.  

 
3.    Walk for Green Future 2012 – For the first time in the history of the school, the PPA organized a massive event that was highly appreciated by all the stakeholders. The Walk was themed as “Walk for Green Future” where all the activities emphasized on making the environment greener to leave a healthy future for our children. This event was remarkable in the fact that during this event, for the first time in Colombo, the proud flag of the PPA was flown over the Colombo city by helicopter with the support of the parents. The PPA was overwhelmed by the immense support extended by the Principal, Teachers, Students of the school and their Parents, fellow Past Pupils, Well-wishers, Donors, Sponsors, the members of Municipal Council and Police Officers.
