The bus driver and conductor who were arrested after their bus hit and killed two women in Munneswaram, Chilaw were remanded until December 20.
Two women were killed in a bus accident in the Munneswaram area in Chilaw yesterday (December 5). Police said the private bus had first hit a pedestrian causing another woman inside the bus to fall off and be run over by the same bus.
The victims were identified as Malani Kamalani Perera (60) from Maikkulama, Chilaw and Leena Herath Vanigasundari (50), a resident of Ayyanayake Temple Road in Munneswaram.
The accident had occurred at around 7.00am when the bus, traveling from Kurunegala to Chilaw, passing the Munneswaram Temple had come into contact with the pedestrian on the roadside.
The driver had then suddenly slammed the breaks causing a female passenger inside the bus to fall off. She was run over by the same bus.
Police said both women had died on the spot.
