The “Nidahase Pada Yathra” (Freedom March)—initiated under the leadership of the Maha Sangha to demand the release of the incarcerated Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero and to advocate for the religious rights of Buddhist monks—has now reached the vicinity of the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo.
The procession began from Kadawatha today (15), the sixth day of the foot march, and travelled through Kiribathgoda, Peliyagoda, Maligawatta, and Maradana before arriving near the Presidential Secretariat this evening.
Due to the march, heavy police security has been deployed in the area surrounding the Presidential Secretariat and nearby roads.
The march commenced on October 10 from near the statue of Wariyapola Sri Sumangala Thero, located within the premises of the historic Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) in Kandy.
Meanwhile, it is reported that the Galle Road has been blocked for traffic movement near the Presidential Secretariat at Galle Face due to the foot march.
