A low-pressure area that has developed near Sri Lanka is expected to bring enhanced rainfall across the island and surrounding sea areas today (22), the Department of Meteorology has warned.
Under the influence of the developing weather system, heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at some locations in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Northwestern provinces.
Showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northern, Northwestern and Southern provinces and in the Anuradhapura District, with cloudy skies prevailing over these areas.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are forecast in other parts of the island after 1.00 p.m. Misty conditions may also occur at some locations in the Central and Uva provinces during the early morning hours.
The Met. Department has also urged the general public to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning that may occur during thundershowers.
Naval and fishing communities, along with the general public, have been advised to closely monitor weather forecasts and bulletins issued by the Department of Meteorology as the low-pressure system influences weather conditions over the island and surrounding seas.
