The Department of Meteorology has issued a Red-level warning for strong winds and rough seas for multi-day fishing boats operating in the deep-sea areas of the Bay of Bengal.
It said a new low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal near the North Andaman Islands.
The system is most likely to persist over the same region and intensify into a depression by October 24, 2026.
Thereafter, it is very likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify further into a deep depression by October 25, followed by a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 26, 2026.
Therefore, naval and fishing communities are warned not to venture into the deep-sea areas bounded by 10°N–20°N and 80°E–95°E until further notice, the Met. Department said.
Furthermore, naval and fishing communities currently operating in these sea areas are advised to move to safe locations.
Based on data available as of October 23, there is a high probability of cyclogenesis (the formation of a depression) over the next 24-48 hours.
Naval and fishing communities currently operating in these sea areas are advised to move away from the affected areas.
Those engaged in activities in the affected sea areas are advised to remain vigilant and closely monitor future forecasts and bulletins issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard, it added.
