The government is setting up various commissions in order to earn commissions, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe stated.
When one commission ends its programme another is established in its place and the public does not benefit in any way, he said today (December 10) while addressing a press conference held in Colombo.
He added that even though the government set up a salary commission the government worker’s salary was only increased by Rs.1200 in the 2014 budget which amounts to around Rs.40 a day.
Wickremasinghe said that the government has decided to tax everything and that only a toilet tax remains to be imposed.
The government that claims to not have the funds to provide the people with concessions is the same one that undertook the construction of an airport in Mattala and a cricket ground in Sooriyaweva, he said.
He highlighted that the government debt which was at Rs.1.8 trillion in 2005 had increased to Rs. 6.6 trillion in just eight years.
The Opposition Leader criticised the government for its expenditure in relation to the building of roads, claiming that Sri Lanka spends twice or thrice the amount of money that any other country spends on every kilometre of road that is constructed.
He also offered his assistance to the Bribery and Corruption Commission which has been burdened with complaints.
