The low-pressure area that was located near Sri Lanka is moving westwards, away from the island, while a new low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal near the North Andaman Islands, the Department of Meteorology said.

The Met. Department stated that the new system is highly likely to intensify into a depression by tomorrow (24), while remaining in the same general area.

Thereafter, the system is expected to move west-northwestwards and intensify further, with a high probability of developing into a deep depression by October 25.

There is also a very high likelihood that the system will develop into a cyclone over the west-central Bay of Bengal by October 26, the Met. Department noted.

Although the system is not expected to have a direct impact on Sri Lanka, the wind flow associated with it is extending across the island.

As a result, an increase in rainfall is expected over the southwestern parts of Sri Lanka during the next few days, according to the Department of Meteorology.
