A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, near the North Andaman Islands, is likely to intensify into a depression today (24), with further strengthening expected over the next two days, the Department of Meteorology stated.
The system is predicted to move west-northwestwards and develop into a deep depression by tomorrow (25), before intensifying into a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by October 26, the Met. Department noted.
Although the system is not expected to have a direct impact on Sri Lanka, rainfall is likely to increase across the southwestern parts of the island over the next few days as winds associated with the system extend across the country.
Showers or thundershowers are expected at times today in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Northern and North Western provinces. Other parts of the island are likely to experience showers or thundershowers after 1 p.m., with fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm possible at some locations, according to the Department.
The general public has been urged to take adequate precautions against temporary, localized strong winds and lightning that may occur during thundershowers.
Meanwhile, misty conditions are expected at some locations in the Central and Uva provinces during the early hours of the morning.
