Two spill gates of the Victoria Reservoir opened automatically at around 8:00 p.m. today (27), as water levels reached maximum capacity amid prevailing adverse weather conditions.
Reservoir Engineer Wasantha Ehelapitiya said that each spill gate releases 75 cubic metres of water per second.
Accordingly, a total of 150 cubic metres of water per second is being discharged into the Mahaweli River through the two spill gates, the reservoir engineer said.
The released water will flow downstream along the Mahaweli River towards the Randenigala Reservoir.
Authorities have urged the general public to remain vigilant about water levels in the lower reaches of the Mahaweli River and to exercise extra caution when using the river.
