The Department of Meteorology has issued an amber-level advisory warning of severe lightning in the Monaragala, Ampara and Batticaloa districts, effective until 11.30 p.m. today.
According to the Met. Department, thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely at several places in the three districts. Temporary, localised strong winds may also occur during thundershowers.
The general public has been urged to take adequate precautions to minimise possible damage caused by lightning.
The Department of Meteorology also advised people to seek shelter indoors during thunderstorms and avoid taking refuge under trees. People have also been warned to stay away from open areas, including paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies.
The public has further been advised to avoid using wired telephones and electrical appliances connected to power sources during thunderstorms, as well as open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats.
Residents have also been urged to remain alert to fallen trees and power lines and contact local disaster management authorities for emergency assistance.
