The Ministry of Education has issued a circular outlining guidelines for the preparation of school timetables in line with the implementation of the new education reforms.
The circular has been issued under the signature of the Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Nalaka Kaluwewe.
The new curriculum reforms were launched with Grade 1 in 2026 and will be implemented in several phases over the following years.
Accordingly, the new curricula will be introduced for Grades 2 and 6 in 2027, followed by Grades 3 and 7 in 2028.
In 2029, the reforms will be extended to Grades 4, 8 and 10, while Grades 5, 9 and 11 are scheduled to adopt the new curricula in 2030.
The new curriculum for the Senior Secondary Grades is scheduled to be introduced to Grade 12 in 2031. Students following this curriculum are expected to sit for the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level Examination for the first time in 2033, according to the circular.
Meanwhile, the existing curriculum will continue to apply to certain grades during the transition period.
These include Grades 3, 4 and 5 in 2027, Grades 4 and 5 in 2028, and Grade 5 in 2029.
Accordingly, the Ministry has instructed schools to prepare their timetables by taking into account the curriculum implementation schedule applicable to each academic year, ensuring a smooth transition to the new education reforms.
