The bodies of two workers who were trapped after a gem mine collapsed in the Angammana area in Batugedara, Ratnapura have been recovered today.
The two men were trapped around 30 feet below the ground after the mine collapsed at around 4.00pm yesterday (22) while a voluntary group attempted to rescue them under instruction by the Ratnapura Police.
However, when the team managed to remove the soil and water and reached the men at around 3.00am this morning they were already dead, police said.
The victims have been identified as a 39-year-old resident of Angammana North and a 49-year-old from Lellupitiya, Sannasgama. The bodies have been placed at the mortuary of the Ratnapura Hospital.
The postmortem examinations are to be carried out today while Ratnapura Police are conducting an investigations.
