A crew member of a Sri Lankan flagged freight vessel is said to be missing after falling overboard near Lisbon. Search operations conducted by Marine Police are still continuing, Portuguese media reported.
The accident had taken place on Tuesday at around 4.00pm near the Bugio lighthouse at the entrance of the Port of Lisbon, Navy sources revealed.
There was an immediate alert by the ship’s captain in the merchant vessel, flying the flag of Sri Lanka, to the Manager of the Search and Rescue Center in Portugal, who in turn informed the Portuguese Navy in order to hasten assistance.
An Air Force helicopter ‘H101 Merlin’ and various Maritime Police vessels were involved in search and rescue operation, but the Sri Lanka national remains missing, Portugal’s Daily News reported.
The searches took place in the last two days and will continue on Thursday, according to sources.
